Canon EOD 5D Mark II, Sigma DP2 and Olympus Micro 4/3rds

Wow, Photokina has been a sea of cool announcements for prosumers including all these new products

  • Canon 5D Mark II seems like all us Canon folks don’t have to keep crying. Nikon has the incredible D700 and the D300 and now Canon has the 5DII and the 50D. Great preview
  • Sigma DP2 hopefully will be better than the DP1. This had a Foveon 14MP (really it is more like 6MP) sensor, but was painfully slow 5 seconds to produce a RAW image. It is the right idea though, put an APS-sized sensor into a compact body. also now has a 40mm equivalent lense
  • Leica S2 also breaks the mold with a 56% bigger sensor than 35mm full frame to give you a 37.5 megapixel(!!!) sensor. You have to buy all new lenses of course and get used to no zooms again (they ahve 24mm, 35mm, 70mm, 100mm, 120mm and 180mm lenses
  • Olympus Micro Four Thirds. This camera is about compact size 120×65x32mm (4.7×2.6×1.3”) but uses a much larger sensor and it will have interchangeable lenses. Could be an amazing way to get the ultimate high quality in a small package.
  • Canon PowerShot G10 is a close competitor to the upcoing Panasonic Lumix LX3. It has a 15MP sensor, 3” LCD, manual contorls, 28-140mm F/2.8-4.5 equivalent lense. Will be interesting to see how both the LX3 and the G10 with their tiny sensor perform against the Sigma DP2 and the Micro Four Thirds offerings with bigger sensors. It is much bigger than the 150gram compacts at 350g and 109×79x46mm
