Wow, this 300mm f/2.8 is quite a lense according to slrgear.com and also lensrentals.com. It has no distortion even wide open at f/2.8 and a very slight resolution improvement at F/4, but it is really good even at f/2.8. I cranked the shutter speed to 1/800 and left it at f/4. In bright daylight, it is shooting at ISO 100 or 125 which is pretty amazing but I’m still getting blur, so will try 1/1000 or even 1/1600 to see how that goes.
The new 5DS R is quite sharp but I do think that it tends to over exposure shots by ? a stop (I thought that with my 5D2 as well) whereas the Nikon D810 seemed to me to be just spot on and not overblown.
I need to try the Mode 3 image stabilization tomorrow which is supposed to work better for sports. I know I’m misusing the camera for soccer photography, but the continuous autofocus on the center seems to work pretty well. I’m going to try to go to F/8 to get more misfocus latitude.
