Mac Utilities

OK more Mac utilities, this time from a quick read of Mac magazine:

  • iStumbler. This is like a similar utility on Windows, it tells you the strength of various Wifi and Bluetooth devices. Even has a widget for your dashboard
  • USB Missile Launcher. OK, its not really a utility, its a nerf rocket launcher you can attach to your computer to fire at coworkers. Adrian will love one!
  • DVI to HDMI Cable. If you've got a late model TV, then you can take the DVI output of your Mac and plug it directly into the HDMI input. This works great. Its $20.

Share Mac Desktop

I need some help to navigate through a website, so how do I do it. Well, Mac's allow desktop sharing and it should be pretty easy as long as you can get through some settings. Softwareareas.com has a good guide for Max OS X 10.4 "Tiger"

For the machine that you want to share, do this:

  1. System Preferences | Sharing | Apple Remote Desktop. Tick this option.
  2. Click on Access Privileges
  3. Tick “Observe”, “Show when being observed”, “Guests may request permission to control screen”, and “VNC viewers may control screen with password”
  4. Enter the password next to the last of these options, e.g. we’ll assume it’s “easy2guess”

Now you have to forward a port with your router

This application will ask for the IP address of the view. Use whatsmyip.org that should give you the IP address of the client

This is the hard part, you have to forward TCP port 5900 to your Mac. Every router is a little different, but for Linksys and D-link, you need to know the IP address of the router and access its administrative web page. Typically http://192.168.0.1 for D-link and http://192.168.1.1 for Linksys. Hope you know the password for the router!

Install a VNC Client onto the "viewer machine"

Use Chicken of the VNC as its free and my goodness what a great name!

You need to give the viewer, the IP address from wahtsmyip.org and also the password

He should then see a replica of your screen and you can now share and debug

Windows alternatives

As an alternative, Unyte is a free skype addin that does that same thing for any Skype user with Windows. You can actually view from any platform with IE, Firefox or Safari, but the client has to be a Windows machine.

I'm going to see if this runs under Parallels

Don't every drag and replace a folder

In the Mac, I just lost 10GB worth of data doing that. With Windows, when you "replace" a folder, it actually merges the contents together. With the Mac, it overwrites anything taht was there. Taht means once you do it that data is lost, lost. It doesn't even go into the trash. You've been warned as xvsxp.com points out. Sigh!

Azureus Plugins

This is a cool tool for downloading and runs cross platform and also has a large plug in library. Some of the interesting ones are.

Zeropaid has a nice list including advanced statistics

BT and router problems? File Sharing FAQ - dslreports.com
Although its effectiveness is questionable, you could install a freeware IP blocker called PeerGuardian 2 (methlabs.org/projects) that blocks incoming traffic from IPs that are known or suspected to be part of the surveillance networks. You can use this if you’re running the original BitTorrent client. In Azureus there’s a plug-in available called SafePeer that uses a similar block list as PeerGuardian, but it only loads when Azureus does. Use the Plugins menu to open Installation Wizard and follow the prompts until you get a list of plug-ins. Check the SafePeer box and continue through the menus to install it. When you restart Azureus, SafePeer will download the current IP block list (adding about 30 seconds to the load time).

Hidden iMovie Files

Sometimes the Mac can be too clever for its own good. iMovie has a hidden directory structure for movies and somehow a movie I made is chewing up 50GB of disk, but you can't see it. Discussions.apple.com tells us that iMovie keeps its files in something called a pacakge. This is a collection of files that Finder and Spotlight only see as one file.

You need to download WhatSize to figure out what is actually on the disk since packages are hidden.

To then take them apart, you that need to find the movies which have the extension .iMovieProject and then you can see whats there by right clicking on the name and then choose Show Package Contents to find the Media folder with all the clips.

Mac DVD Backup

I normally use DVD Decrypter and then DVD Shrink on the PC to backup the kid's DVDs which are constantly getting trashed. For Mac OS X, the solutions seem to be Mac The Ripper and then to burn the copy, you can use the included iDVD to get a dual layer onto a single layer or you can use Burn OSX

You can also check Rip Different as a good overall source of information

NTFS-3G

Now you can read and write NTFS volumes. Mac OSx only allows reading with NTFS-3G

Here are some miore notes:

MacCast Forum [Powered by Invision Power Board]
The first step is made possible by Google. They created a program called MacFUSE which allows for (oversimplification warning) new file systems to be accessed by a user-space app rather than loading a kernel extension. What you need to do is http://code.google.com/p/macfuse/. There are many FUSE modules out there for various types of file systems, there are far too may to enumerate and I don't know how many are available on OS X.
Daniel's Useless Site
NTFS-3G is a FUSE filesystem that implements read/write NTFS volumes. NTFS-3G now works on Macs using MacFUSE. I’ve had a Fink package for NTFS-3g for a while now, but since I’ve had so many people asking about a binary version, I decided to make an Installer package.

This package doesn’t use Fink, but instead requires the MacFUSE Core package from here. Then download the NTFS-3G package and install it. This package contains ntfs-3g 1.710.

To connect to an NTFS volume:

first unmount the NTFS disk if currently mounted read-only (you can use Disk Utility to do this and also to get the partition). Then

mkdir mountpoint
ntfs-3g /dev/diskpartition mountpoint -ovolname="Volume Name"

where mountpoint is directory to mount the disk, diskpartition is the NTFS disk’s partition in /dev and Volume Name is the disk’s volume name.

To disconnect:

umount mountpoint

or eject from the Finder.

See ntfs-3g man page for more options.

Mac Decoder Ring for Windows Users

There are lots of myths about Mac's that come from previous versions. I've used Macs and Windows for years. From the very first floppy only Mac all the way to the Mac Book Pro. I do think that Apple is making it way harder though by not have a Windows transition guide because just about everything that you do or want is available but the terms are different, so here's a list from the most annoying to the most useful :-)

h3 File System

The file system on the Mac is nearly identical, but the conventions are different. When I first started with the Mac, I was completely confused. Here is the decoder ring

Start Menu. The list of applications on the bottom is equivalent to the first thing you see on the Start Menu in Windows. This is often called the most recently used applications.
All Programs. Macs are much simpler in their applications. Most of the time, the application is the same as the short cut. That is Macs don't have DLLs, so instead of the Start Menu/All Programs, you just browse to the equivalent of c:\Program Files which is in Macintosh talk is done by clicking on Macintosh HD and then clicking on Applications.

Also the file name conventions are different, Mac OS X uses the Unix convention of forward "/" rather than Windows backwards "\". Here are the equivalents on a standard one drive system:

| C:\ | / |
| C:\program files | /Applications |
| My Documents | ~ your user name |
Macintosh HD. This is just the c:\ drive also know as Hard Disk by default.

Mac OS X Disk Maintenance

With Windows I know all the maintenance things. I use O&O Defrag for making disks faster, Chkdsk for fixing errors, with the Mac, it is a different world. http://www.macattorney.com/ts.html#Anchor-57343 has a good list of things to be done.

# Repair permission is something you can do with /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility and you can also do a disk check, although this is normally not available on my MacBook Pro for some reason.
# Clean caches (a la the Windows, delete unnecessary files) can be done with freeware Cache Out X at http://www.nonamescriptware.com/forums/index.php?act=Downloads and you syould also clean out application caches as well manually at http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20060111202501460  which are at ~/Library/Caches (by the way ~ is a unix expression that OS X uses that mean "My Documents"
# Mac OS X has the equivalent of a registry called Preferences. You fix with with a freeware utility at http://homepage.mac.com/jonn8/as/
# The equivalent of Windows safe mode is called Safe Boot. You get it by holding down the shift key when you turn on your Mac. See http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
# For disk defragging, is should help, but there isn't anything available yet for the new Intel-based Macs

Mac Printing to Canon i9900

Now that I've been hacking away at the Mac, its time to print. Printing is actually pretty easy. There is a built in driver for the HP 4250n that I use, but for the Canon, you get deep into color management and so forth. I can't seem to get my Mac to find Windows print shares. Something to do with permissions I think, so in hooking it up with USB. It seems to work fine, except that borderless printing doesn't work. No word on why, but if you don't need borderless and don't mind the white stripe around then:

  1. Canon. Go to Canon to load up the Mac OS X print drivers
  2. Plug in the Canon, Mac has a version of plug and play that recognizes the driver
  3. Start Photoshop CS2 and then start to hack away at the settings. The most important being setting CS2 to let Photoshop determine colors and then perceptual colormetric and black point compensation
  4. Since I'm use Red River paper, went over to the Red River site to download ICCs
  5. Make sure to use that ICC when printing and in the print driver make sure that Color management is turned off and that I'm on highest quality settings.

If you want borderless, then the only way I've found to do this is to use the Windows drivers. The other issue is that there is Canon Print monitor so you can't tell your ink levels. There is quite a bit of discussion about how crappy the Canon Mac OS X drivers are and I kind of agree. In this case it gets more complicated:

  1. Load Parallel or use Base Camp
  2. Install the PC version of Photoshop CS2
  3. Install the PC version of the drivers
  4. When you start Parallels, go to the lower right and enable USB printing for the i9900, so that PC Photoshop can see the USB
  5. Now you can set everything like the PC, but be careful not to use your Mac too much while printing. Because of the overhead, printing is very slow and if you play too much, the driver thinks the Canon is out of paper, but at least you get borderless

OK, I normally use DVDDecryptor, SmartRipper or AutoGK for the PC to backup up DVDs, for the Mac, it looks like MacTheRipper is the most popular at least according to the most popular list at MacUpdate

Another very popular one is HandBrake which seems to be more like AutoGK in that it rips a DVD and then converts it into an MPEG4

Mac Audio programs

OK, I just love MP3DirectCut for edtiing MP3s, MP3Tag for editing tags and filenames, ffdshow for codecs galore and DMC for conversions, LAME for MP3 encoding and ExactAudioCopy for CD copying but what are the Mac equivalents. Well, Pure-mac.com has a good list and their MP3. I also checked out MacUpdate.com

there is of course Audacity for doing editing that is free
MP3 Trimmer lets you edit things directly in MP3 rather than coding to WAV, so it is fast like MP3 Direct Cut
RadioLover cuts an iTunesj radio stream into individual MP3s.
RealPlayer although filled with adware does let you listen to rmvb and rma files on the Mac.

Audioslicer this thing goes though a big MP3 and finds silences, great for albums that have been recorded as one large MP3

Ipoddisk is a tool that lets you copy MP3 froms your Ipod.

Tritag. The most like MP3Tag, this lets you create a new filename out of the MP3 ID tags

Isquint tool converts files into the iPod MP4 or H.264 formats.

iTunes-LAME Encoder lets you connect iTunes to use the much better LAME encoder.

:Max":http://sbooth.org/Max is a high quality extraction program.

The Macbook Pro comes with quicktime, I normally use Zoom Player and the open source FFDShow for playing on Windows, so what do I do on the Mac. Well, first Quicktime does have a bunch of components like that from Divx and there is a shim to play "Xvid":

Alternatively, you can use the Xvid binay that Nagelic has done and get the A52codec for AC3 support.

Turns out there is VLC as a Mac OS X player as well which I've used.

displays are also changing

AppleInsider | Next-gen MacBook Pro to shine brighter
Confirming an earlier but widely discounted report from Taiwan-based DigiTimes, faithful industry sources say the new pro-oriented systems will mark the start of a gradual transition away from cold cathode fluorescent backlights (CCFLs) and towards LED backlights for the Mac maker.

Thus far, those sources say Apple has agreed to implement the LED technology only within a revision to its 15-inch MacBook Pro due sometime in the second quarter of this year. A broader expansion to the 17-inch model and across the company's 13-inch consumer line, though inevitable, reportedly remains under consideration.</blockquote

MacBook Ultracompact

Also at the WWDC in August, Apple is going to launch a subnotebook.

AppleInsider | Apple to re-enter the sub-notebook market
This new tiny MacBook, people familiar with the project say, remains in development ahead of its target launch date around the time WWDC rolls around mid-year. It will be both lighter and more compact than any other Mac portable Apple has put forth in recent years, bundling a display of similarly smaller proportions.</blockquote

Next Macbook

I've been wondering when the next Macbook would ship. The days of Intel jamming new processors out every month seems to be over. The net is that we won't see a new Macbook until this coming May, so if you need to buy one youare reasonably safe. The improvements are from Intel and will mainly be incremental. The bus speed will stay at about 2.4GHz as this is a new chipset not processor release. Graphics will get a boost for the low-end MacBook and the front side bus will double.

Mac Rumors: Apple Mac Rumors and News You Care About
TG Daily reports that Intel's next generation mobile platform, code-named Santa Rosa, is currently tracking for a May release.

The platform will feature many improvements over today's incarnation found in the iMac, MacBook, and MacBook Pro. While the processor will remain of the Core 2 Duo "Merom" variety and will top out at 2.4 GHz, the front side bus speed will be increased to 800 MHz.

Also, systems that use integrated graphics (MacBook, Mac Mini) will stand to see a big boost from Intel's latest graphics technology. The GMA X3000 will implement several important graphics features in hardware and support pixel and vertex shader models 3.0, whereas GMA 950 only supports pixel shader model 2.0. This improvement will no doubt be a boost for casual gamers and for Apple's desire to include even more impressive visual effects in their systems.

Lastly, Santa Rosa will feature Intel's flash caching technology, code-named Robson. The technology should bring better system performance, especially in the areas of battery life, system startup, and access of frequently used applications.

Sony SZ and Apple MacBook Pro

Both Sony and Apple have updated their lines with some amazingly cool laptops. I'm really drooling over them because they both have the ultra fast core duo. Here are the recommendations:

My new top recommendation is the Sony SZ Series. It is the 13.3" widescreen version of the TX series. The value model looks liek the VGN-SZ370P/C listing at $2450, it has Intel Core 2 Duo T7200 (2GHz), 2GB Ram, 120GB hard drive, EDGE access. They also have a build to order option in the VGN-SZ340 that lets you get a nice priced (because it uses XP Home and not XP Pro) similar model but most importantly that option lets you get free engraving on your machine. It even has a biometric fingerprint reader for security and a webcam for skypeing. This is a good regular machine. You can travel with it and you can also use it daily. It won't work well in coach, so turn on your ipod and relax if you do a lot of that travel. It weighs only 3.5" which is what makes it truly great and portable. Pricegrabber has the SZs at a wide variety of places with the SX370P at $2250 and the SZ330P at $1850.

the big news though is that Apple just updated their Macbook Pro line to have the Intel Core Duo 2 chip on it. This has an amazing 17" screen, but it does weigh 5 pounds and is big to carry, so it is best if you mainly are just transporting and not O.J'ing through airports. Cost is $2600 academic or $2700 online. Ships with 2GB, Intel Core Duo 2 2.33 GHz, 160GB hard drive and of course runs both Windows and MacOS.

Sony TX Series you really want the most ultra portable, then my old favorite has been the Sony T and now update to the TX line. I've had the VGN-T140, VGN-TX650 and the VGN-TX750. They've been remarkable good especially because they are light (2.7lb) and have a long running battery and integrated DVD. Their main plus is that the screen is small enough to use in the miniscule coach class on U.S. airlines, but that also means the screen is really too small for everyday use. I only recommend it if you really need something, tiny, tiny. The latest models the VGN-TXN15P/W have switched to using EVDO, so it is faster in the US but actually less useful for international travel where the GSM standard is more prevalent and useful. The -15 lists for $2300 and has 1GB Ram, 80GB hard drive,

Dell XPS 410 vs. Apple iMac 24"

OK, so here is an interesting shootout, take the Dell XPS 410 that has the Core Duo and compare it with the Apple iMac.

The iMac is $2200, has a 2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4MB cache, 1GB of 667MHz DDR2-SDRAM (PC2-5300), 250GB 7200rpm SATA Drive , nVidia GeForce 7600GT 256MB SDRAM and includes 1 year of repair and 90 days of over the phone support for $2200.

Anandtech looked at a sample Dell which was similarly configured with Dell P965 BTX motherboard, Intel Core Duo 2 E660600 (2.4GHz 4MB), 2×1GB Nanya PC-5300 5-5-5-15 Ram, GeFore 7900 GTX, 2×320GB WD 7200 RPM and a 24" Dell 2407WFP. So it is a bit higher at $2900 (vs. 2700 for a homebrew similar system). The overclock loving XPS 700 costs about $400 more and the assembly and Dell name costs about $200 more than a home built system.

The net conclusion is the 2407WFP is an amazing monitor for any system. At $800 street, its a great buy if you want really great video quality. They do say that it is a decent machine and that you should get the $50 upgrade to the #6400 and that you can safely get the nVidia 7900 GS without losing much gaming performance, so if you are stuck on a decent performaning machine it isn't a bad choice. The net price would be $2300 where the big differences are a 2×250GB, 2GB of DDR 667, ATI RAdeon X1300 Pro 256MB (if you are a gamer a 7900GS is $150 more). So it ends up being about the same price as the Apple when you consider upgrades.

However its interesting to see how close the Apple iMac is actually in terms of pricing and performance. Makes it a winner from the POV of ease of use, etc if you want something really plug and play.

Apple Mac Pro is the ultimate PC?

AnandTech: Apple's Mac Pro: A Discussion of Specifications
The biggest part of Apple's Mac Pro announcement is of course the move to Intel processors and as many had predicted, Apple chose to go with Intel's Woodcrest based Xeon processors instead of Core 2 for the Mac Pro. Architecturally, the Woodcrest based Xeons are no different than the Conroe based Core 2 processors, so you get the same level of performance we showcased in our Core 2 review. With Xeon you do get the ability to go to multi-socket systems and a faster FSB, both of which are not possible with Core 2.

So basically I had always thought of Xeon as slow and expensive, but essentially that is the name for the Core 2 server/workstation chip. So the $2500 Mac Pro is the machine to beat now and what a box it is. The main drawback is that it uses a 771-pin socket so upgrading it means you are on the more expensive workstation path. On the other hand, you get a dual processor machine from the get go. Apple doesn't sell anything else. How's that for a change.

If you are ordering one of these babies, drool, drool then some good notes from the piece:

  • Future CPUs. Another development is that the Clovertown is the next turn of the crank for the Xeon/Woodstocks. These babies will put four cores on a single chip, so a dual processor machine will have 8 cores! Wow. It uses all workstation parts, so it has the Intel 5000X which with 4 DIMMs, gives you a whopping 21GBps to memory in a 4-way interleave. And technically, Apple lets you put up to eight 7300GTs into a single machine. Wow!*&*
  • Memory. The main drawback is they are using the new exotic FB-DIMMs so they'll be more expensive. The right configuration for memory is 4×1GB probably which is $676 from newegg and a whopping $1100 from Apple or a 4×512MB.
  • Drives. BTW the same is true of hard drivers, the box can have four SATA drives, but Apples cost $400 while you can get very nice 500GB drives like the 7200.10 for half that or just get a 7200.10 750GB for $350.
  • Graphics Cards. Apparently you have to buy these from Apple and they offer only three, the 7300GT is a basic model for those of us not gaming. and then there is a shootout between the ATI X1900XT which on PCs is faster and the nVidia Quadro FX 4500 (which confusingly is really a 7800GTX with a few workstation tweaks) which is faster on the Mac. Most think that's because of driver differences.

Main thing to wait for if you don't want to build a $5000 workstation is a lower end Mac Pro with Core 2 that's single processor.

Mac Spam filters

Well back to work. The ACL tear sure hurt for three weeks and I have to admit I was completely zonked out. Amazing what I spewed on this blog, so I take it all back. Now that I'm back with 1,000 email messages, this whole spam thing has taken on a new urgency. I've been using an iMac as my main machine and Entourage for accessing Exchange. The base spam filter in it doesn't seem to work worth a darn, so I'm off to search for add-ons. There aren't many for the Mac. Here are some observations.

  • Mac Mail. The mail that comes with jaguar actually has a Bayesian spam filter in it. It reads IMAP which is great but not the rest of Exchange so to use it I'd have to use Entourage for calendar and contacts and Mac mail for the rest. A nice UI though as usual.

Entourage Problems

I've been using Mac OS X for a while now. Finally getting used to it. Main issue is that Entourage seems very slow and also seems to crash. * "Entourage Unexpected Quits":http://www.macfixitforums.com/php/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=OfficeX&Number=370362&page=19&view=collapsed&sb=1&o=&fpart=1. Another in a series of great errors messages. Have this with both Entourage and Ecto (a offline blog editor). Seems like the equivalent of app hang, but there don't seem to be any user accessible diagnostics. Happens whenever I try to browse contacts or calendar entries. There is a magic entry with Entourage, hold the option key down when you start it and you get the rebuild database options (why isn't this a menu somewhere, maybe a Mac convention). * Ecto unexpectely quits. Still need to research this one. I'm sorry it was unexpected ;-}

Entourage and Exchange: It works sort of

Using Exchange Server with Entourage. I've been trying to get a Macintosh to work with our servers. Man, the Macintosh sure has gotten a lot more complicated since the good old days of the Mac Plus. Spent a day trying to get Exchange and Entourage, the new Mac client to cooperate. It sure is mysterious. Neither the online website nor the online help are any good. Thank goodness for Google, here is the MVPS.org site that seems the most helpful. Essentially, Entourage does not use the native Exchange protocol called MAPI, so you have to make sure lots of other things are turned on for it to work. To wit, you need: * Microsoft Exchange Server 2000 (with Service Pack 2) or later * Outlook Web Access must be installed and active (this starts HTTP DAV) * IMAP, SMTP and LDAP protocols must be on and active * Free/Busy server and Outlook Web Access URLs have to be know. These are usually http://server/exchange/public so you can see the free/busy of other people in your company and http://server/exchange/yourname respectively so you can get your calendar and contacts. The long and short of it is that you have to get your system administrator up to sped that you are doing this and he has to turn on a bunch of things he may not want to for security reasons (for instance, we don't have SMTP on because of the obvious holes it can bring up). IMAP and LDAP appear to be up though. You can sniff the path using OWA and "TCPFlow":http://www.entourage.mvps.org/faq/tcpflow.html by sniffing the request that OWA sends when looking up Free/Busy information (search the log for /public/).
