Endowment squeeze

NYT: Blogs – DealBook – Harvard, Private Eq
So, my numbers are rough, very rough estimates — but the problem is apparent. In the short term, unless it boosts its liquid returns, Harvard is going to have to raise a lot in donations or eat up its liquid assets to fund university obligations and its private equity commitments. This results in a spiraling decline in Harvard’s liquid assets as each year they go lower to meet these needs and more and more assets become tied up in private equity. This assumes the markets stay where they are in the next three years — there are scenarios where liquid assets do worse (like yesterday), or better, of course.

This is likely why Harvard recently sold $1.5 billion in debt, and unsuccessfully tried to sell $1.5 billion of its private equity portfolio. It needs to cover short-term funding obligations rather than liquidate illiquid assets at fire-sale prices. In essence, Harvard is more like a hedge fund than ever — trading for short-term gain with the same risks involved.

Other universities may be in worse positions. Duke, for example, sold $500 million in bonds, and Princeton $1.5 billion. Again, the reason appears to be to fund liquidity.

Port 25 blocking….argh

At a hotel which blocks port 25. Of course, there is no way to find their SMTP server to send email. The solution is that many mail servers also accept mail on port 26, so you either have to find the SMTP server that works on the network (good luck). Or reconfigure your client to use Port 26. On bluehost.com and also atlarge.net, port 26 works fine, so you have to go to the Mail/Preferences/Accounts/Outgoing SMTP Server and click on the combo box and select Edit Server List then click on the STMP server and the Advanced pane. Choose use custom port and type in 26. I normally also turn off SSL to make sure it basically works.

Port 25 Blocking
Many ISPs are blocking what is called “Port 25″ which is the port used to send e-mail. They are doing this to cut down on the amount of spam that is sent from their networks.

All e-mail sent via the Internet is routed through the port 25, the channel used for communication between an e-mail client and an e-mail server. Even though port 25 blocking will probably become an industry standard, however, the filter can create problems for e-mail servers and block legitimate e-mail as well as spam.

Port 25 blocking allows ISPs to block spam sent out through their networks, but it tends to punish the innocent that have a need to send through e-mail servers other than those belonging to their ISP. The ISPs that block port 25 require their SMTP server to be used instead of the remote SMTP server or a SMTP server running on your computer.

iPhoto 09 fails after OS X reinstall

Apple – Support – Discussions – suddenly can t load iPhoto 08 again …
What happened with me is that I was running iPhoto ’09 on a Hard Disk that was going bad. I decide to migrate the OSX boot to another volume, and then did a ‘migration’ of all my users, docs, etc to the new hard disk.

When I went to boot iPhoto though, I got the error with _ILiPhotoShowTrashAlbumAttributeKey. I then did a software update, which loaded iLife 09 Browser Plug-ins (for some reason that had to be reinstalled) and after that, viola–iPhoto launched.

I think the problem was my old HD that had the boot system had the Browser Plug In, but when I stood up the new volume from the OSX Install DVD that broswer plug-in didn’t migrate over (or needed to be reinstalled)
