Apple to Update MacBook Air to Penryn Soon? – Mac Rumors
The external design is to remain the same, but the new MacBook Air is said to incorporate a new Penryn-class processor “from 2.0GHz and potentially beyond”. To compensate, Apple will be including a higher capacity battery.
In fact, the new revision of the MacBook Air will draw it much more in-line with the current MacBook internals. Expect to see SSD prices in-line with the current revision, however the hard drive version of the MacBook Air will likely be upgraded to 120 GB, and optionally 160 GB, due to falling prices for 1.8-inch hard drives.
PhoneNews is not a typical source of Apple rumors, but appears to have a reasonably good reputation.
The timeframe for such an update is also reasonable with earlier reports indicating that Intel was planning on a Penryn update to the custom MacBook Air processor. Several readers, however, had hoped that Apple would simply choose to utilize the more power-efficient chips at the same processor speeds in order to extend battery life.

Well, the latest “macrumor”:http://www.macrumors.com/2008/08/12/ipod-touch-and-macbook-updates-for-september/ is that the iPod Touch gets refresh to look like the iPhone 3G and that the new MacBook and MacBook Pro’s are coming.
So unless you are a student and like the discounts on the old models, I’d say waiting makes some sense. The MacBooks will use the new Intel upgraded platforms and upgrade graphics.

Too sad that we need MacBook now rather than waiting two weeks!
Mac Rumors: Apple Mac Rumors and News You Care About
Signs are starting to appear that Apple may be prepping for a revision of their Mac laptops in the near future. Following up a previous Commercial Times report that pointed to a Q3 (July-September) order for MacBook displays, the paper now reports that Apple has increased its order of “notebook-use printed circuit boards” by 20% this quarter.
Meanwhile, Apple has notified Best Buy that they would have limited MacBook shipments over the next two weeks. While retail inventories alone aren’t typically an accurate predictor of Apple product refreshes, combined with these other reports it may be more suggestive.
Apple has been rumored to be working on new aluminum MacBook Pro designs that will adopt features of the current iMac and MacBook Air. Intel’s recent Montevina introduction also provides Apple with suitable processor upgrades to power new laptops.

!
The rumor is that the screen is nicer at real quarter VGA and maybe it won’t be so incredibly slow since it now has 600MHz Arm rather than 300MHz. The other big drawback of the first generation iPhone is pathetic battery life when you are using the Mail application because apparently it keeps polling. If that gets fixed then slight tip to iPhone, but Blackberry is in the running for now.
Personally I think in a year, the applications momentum for the iPhone will tip things in its favor. But Blackberry Bold is a good product. Notable features in the “Crackberry.com”:http://crackberry.com/blackberry-9000-smartphone-review-part-ii review are:
* Wifi. Support A/B/G now
* Intel XScale 624MHz
* 5 ounces or 140g
The initial reports are that it is fast. The Cure often gets hung up while it is doing something in the background. It only has 96MB of onboard flash so that is hardly surprising. The screen is about the same size as before. Maybe 1/4″ larger.
The MicroSD where you load things is external. Yeah. The Blackberry Curve had one which I use for music that was behind the battery. GPS is also there now. It still has that mini trackball thing. I personally find it small and it really does gather lint and stops working.
The operating system is updated to 4.6 whcih has lots of eye candy with nicer looking themes and a nicer effect as you roll the trackball. And the fonts look nicer with the higher resolution and brighter display. Also folks think the speakerphone is better. That is great as the iPhone speakerphone is crappy. The media application is still pretty bad, although there are players like FlipSide and KiuTunes that you can buy (not!) but at least they have playlists.
The camera has a flash but it is still a very fuzzy 2 megapixels which I’m sure is more about the lense. It now does video though FWIW

Early Version of Intel’s Nehalem Benchmarked, Much Faster than Penryn – Mac Rumors
Anandtech had access to a 2.66GHz Nehalem processor which they pitted against a 2.66GHz Penryn processor. Performance improvements ranged from 20-50% faster for the Nehalem chip. h.264 video encoding was tested and saw a 44% speed boost on Nehalem vs Penryn on the equally clocked processors. They claim that the 2.66GHz Nehalem outpaces the current top-of-the-line 3.2GHz Penryn.
Early Version of Intel’s Nehalem Benchmarked, Much Faster than Penryn – Mac Rumors
Apple will certainly adopt the Nehalem processors after they become available. While the first server-grade Nehalem processors are expected in Q4 of 2008, desktop and laptop models won’t be available until sometime in 2009.

This corresponds to what I’ve seen, you’d expect that Office 2008 being a native Intel application would be much faster than Office 2004 which is PowerPC and runs in emulation on Intel. Well, the results are a little confusing. It is faster, but not much in many things:
| | Excel Open | Word Scroll | Entourage Download |
| 2004 | 0:25sec | 1:04 sec. | 1:29 sec |
| 2008 | 0:23 sec | 0:51 sec. | 0:49 sec |
So don’t upgrade to Office 2008 for speed. Also there is a new SP1 which is supposed to fix some of the many stability issues on Office 2008. Good luck. I think I’m staying on 2004 for now.

Well we’ve narrowed down choices to two choices, two hosters against one of three desktop and two mobile clients. Here are the parameters:
Support for either of, in order:
* Mac OS X application. That is Mail, iCal and Address Book that are native to OS X and which is fast.
* Entourage 2004 or 2008 from Microsoft and typically free with any hoster. 2004 is slow as it is a non-native application while 2008 is new and definitely has sync issues.
* Outlook 2007 from Windows or via Parallels on the Mac. But Parallels on the Mac is very slow.
And to support both of:
* iPhone. We really mean the version 2 that will have ActiveSync
* Blackberry. Because folks have these but like the iPhone
So our choices technically are:
* Kerio. This is a Mac messaging, contact and calendaring backend
* Exchange
Here is how the matrix looks right now:
| | Kerio | Exchange | Comment |
| Mac Mail | Runs in Imap | Runs as imap | Both of these work fine |
| Address Book | Needs Kerio Sync to change contacts | Requires Entourage | |
| iCal | Use “Caldev”:http://www.kerio.com/manual/kmsug/en/ch11s05.html#sect-icalcaldavset on Leopard to allow delegation | Requires Entourage | |
| Entourage 2004 | Via OWA Emulation | Works | Not a native Intel app |
| Entourage 2008 | Need to Test | Need to test | Allows OOF setting |
| Outlook | Need to Test | Unacceptably Slow | |
| Windows | Need to Test | Works great | Assumes Outlook 2008 |
| Blackberry | Need to test | Works great | |
| iPhone | “v2″:http://forums.kerio.com/index.php?t=msg&th=13051&start=0&S=271491edc283c6f0ec2b666277b0b83e should work | wait for v2 | Kerio looks like Exchange so should work with iPhone v2! |

Dad gave me an old laptop to use. It is from 2004! So it needs lots of updating. First up is to get:
# “Java”:http://java.com. So that I can write programs
# “Dr. Java”:http://drjava.com. Which is a simple editor and program
# “Intel 2200 BG”:http://support.intel.com/support/wireless/wlan/pro2200bg/. I couldn’t connect to Apple’s latest Time Capsule and my drivers haven’t been in updated in four years, so got the latest 11.0 version from last year.
* “Intel Pro100/VM”:http://downloadcenter.intel.com/filter_results.aspx?strTypes=all&ProductID=407&OSFullName=Windows*+XP+Professional&lang=eng&strOSs=44&submit=Go%21 The Pro100/VM is OEM only, so you have to download the Pro100/VE drivers, but these are made in 2003, so after five years, I hope there are some improvements.
