F2 in Mac

2008
09.13

Well, F2 on the Mac changes the screen brightness on MacBooks, but when you are in Excel, you want F2 to be brightness and F4 to be change cell references from absolute and so forth. With the F8-F12 this isn’t an issue, you can unmap those to get to F9 which is recalc by just changing System Preferences/Keyboard & Mouse/Keyboard Shortcuts and unmapping F9. Confused yet?

Macworld | Mac OS X Hints | Change Excel’s ‘edit in cell’ keyboard shortcut

On the PC, you can edit the current cell in place by simply pressing F2. On the Mac, the equivalent keyboard shortcut is Control-U, as F2 is assigned to cut the contents of the current cell. (If you’d like to see all of Excel’s keyboard shortcuts, open Help -> Excel Help, then type keyboard shortcuts in the search box, and then select Excel Keyboard Shortcuts in the results box. You’ll probably find quite a few that you didn’t know about.) After many years of using a PC in my prior job, I found the Control-U shortcut not only hard to remember, but harder to type. Unfortunately, you won’t find the “edit this cell” command listed in Excel’s keyboard customization section, so there’s no apparent way to change the shortcut. With a bit of help from a third-party program, though, you can achieve the same end result—make F2 edit the current cell in Excel (2004 or 2008) on the Mac.

To make this work, you’ll need some sort of program that supports macros; I’m going to use Butler

Cool Tool, iphone availability and early reviews

2008
07.11

“Apple”:http://www.apple.com/retail/iphone/availability.html has a tool showing what is available where. The stores open at 8AM. Amazing the demang. All models except the Black 16GB in Alderwood Mall are available at all four Seattle area stores in Bellevue, Lynnwood, Seattle and Tukwila. 16GB Black not surprisingly is the most popular model. And there are activation issues that make the line super slow

“MacRumors”:http://www.macrumors.com/2008/07/11/iphone-3g-reviews-and-impressions/ has a good summary of initial reviews with the top line being:

# All plastic feels cheaper but you get a little more range because plastic lets in more radio waves ;-)
# The screen is warmer and to some looks too yellow
# Audio quality sems to be better although iLounge disagrees. It definitely could use a better speakerphone which was nearly useless in the first iPhone
# GPS is fast and TeleNav will soon release a turn-by-turn navigation system for the iPhone (cool!)
# The iPhone 3G has already been jailbroken and hactivated and we should see that coming out soon
# “Activation”:http://www.macworld.com/article/134464/2008/07/iphone3g_wrap.html problems seem to have eased by afternoon (pacific time), so maybe tomorrow will be better :-)
# iTouch users can upgrade to 2.0 and get ActiveSync for instance, so they can read email and see calendars in real time when they are in wifi range. That is pretty cool!
# Not surprisingly “avoid”:http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/news/comments/advice-avoid-att-stores-for-iphone-3g/ the AT&T stores, they don’t have much stock but let you queue up and take your name for later when they might be in stock next week.

As an aside, “some”:http://www.alleyinsider.com/2008/7/apple-to-ship-1-million-iphones-this-weekend think Apple could ship 1M iphones this weekend. Wow!

Headphones

!>http://www.headphone.com/productphotos/small/0020331310_2560.jpg! After our most recent trip, nearly all of our earbuds have simply died. Usually, the little cable breaks, so what to do if you need a lot of these and they take abuse. “Headphones.com”:http://headphones.com has some of the best reviews I’ve seen. It is how I originally got the Etymotic ER-6i and ER-4p and ER-4s. Sadly, I’ve lost one ER-6i and two have broken, so what are the best headphones now:

h2. “Ten Best Headphones”:http://www.headphone.com/guide/by-application/our-10-best-headphones/

Most of these aren’t practical for travel but the real winner seems to be the “Shure SE310″:http://www.headphone.com/products/headphones/in-ear-monitor/shure-se310-black.php. It got 5 out of 5 (The Etymotics ER-4Ps are 4.5 out of 5, so close) and it comes in “white”:http://www.amazon.com/Shure-SE310-Sound-Isolating-Earphones/dp/B000NDLJOU. Amazon has them for $200 and the list is $299. While headphones.com has them for $250.

h2. “Entry Level”:http://www.headphone.com/guide/by-application/ipod/

If you can’t stand paying more for your headphones than your iPod or you’ve got kids who will likely rip and destroy them, then try the “Sennheiser MX300″:http://www.headphone.com/guide/by-budget/under-40/sennheiser-mx-300.php which lists for $10 and Amazon has for “$9″:http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-MX300-In-Ear-Headphones/dp/B00004Z0BM. They don’t say it but I’d expect the white “MX500″:http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-MX500-Lightweight-Headphones-White/dp/B0009U5ZCO/ref=pd_bxgy_e_text_b probably works just as well although it is $17 because of the color :_) and because there is a volume control on it. “Macworld”:http://www.macworld.com/product/ipod/230/detail.html also likes the MX 500 and it is nice it comes in a little case too. “iLounge”:http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/ipod/review/sennheiser-mx500-headphones/ also liked the MX 500 giving it an A- saying that while they are uncomfortable for long usage, they sound as good as the Apple ones. BTW, if you don’t mind, you can get blue MX 500 for $10 from “TigerDirect.com”:http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1740385&sku=S302-1066

If you want in the ear, so called in-canal headphones, these are a great step up and much less bulky that on the ear headphones, so a budget set would be then try the “Jays j-JAYS”:http://www.headphone.com/guide/by-manufacturer/jays/jays-j-jays-black.php which are just $50 and do have that snug fit and noise reduction. or the “d-JAYS”:http://www.headphone.com/guide/by-application/ipod/jays-d-jays-white.php which sound better at $100 and got a 4 out of 5 rating.
