Call of Duty 4 does not meet minimum requirements and does not start

If “Call of Duty 4”:http://www.codhq.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=2831 appears to start with the intro screen and then disappears, it probably means your computer doesn’t meet minimum requirements. What an unfriendly and unclear way to handle this problem.

Here is the computer:

* AMD Athlon XP 3200+
* nVidia 5900 FX graphics adapter
* 1GB RAM
* 700GB disk free

So because it is an Athlon XP and not an Athlon 64, I think I’m hosed. The minimum requirements are according to “firingsquad”:http://www.firingsquad.com/news/newsarticle.asp?searchid=17802:

# CPU: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 2.4 GHz or AMD(R) Athlon(TM) 64 2800+ processor or any 1.8Ghz Dual Core Processor or better supported
# RAM: 512MB RAM (768MB for Windows Vista)
# Harddrive: 8GB of free hard drive space
# Video card (generic): NVIDIA(R) Geforce(TM) 6600 or better or ATI(R) Radeon(R) 9800Pro or better

I had forgotten the “differences”:http://www.computing.net/answers/cpus/xp-athlon-vs-athlon-64/10499.html but essentially the Athlon 64 is 64 bits internally.

Fritz Chess Program and online Chess

“Fritz”:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deep_Fritz I’m learning is really an essential chess program for learning. The latest version is Fritz 11 which was reportedly released in November, but no one seems to be selling it. The main feature is that you can input a game you played during a tournament and it shows you from its database of players what move was the most common next and shows you the line. It’s an essential learning tool according to my friend, William.

Also learned from Josh today that playing online chess is essential

2008 National Junior High Championship

Time to sign up, starting March 4, registration costs go up. The “National Junior High Championship”:http://main.uschess.org/tournaments/2008/jhs/ is next month at the Hyatt Regency at the DFW Airport. Time to sign up. It’s way more convenient being at a major airport, but the thought of four days of airport food are pretty, well, depressing.

Kids Games

Here are some that the kids are asking about:

* “Sid Meier’s Civilization IV”:http://pc.gamezone.com/gzreviews/r25732.htm is the next step in a great franchise. Getting older now since it was released late 2005, but a nice game. There are two expansion packs now and it goes for about $37 at “Go Gamer”:http://gogamer.com
* “Nancy Drew The White Wolf of Icicle Creek”:http://www.cinemablend.com/games/PC-Review-Nancy-Drew-The-White-Wolf-Of-Icicle-Creek-4827.html. These are done for pre-teen and teen girls from “Her Interactive”:http://herinteractive.com. These are actually quite hard to find online, so you have to get them direct from the publisher for $20 each.
* “Europa Universalis III”:http://www.1up.com/do/reviewPage?cId=3156420. Seattle Times said this was a great educational game as it has real history and kind of a cool strategy game like Civilization. These are also hard to find, but “Go Gamer”:http://gogamer.com has them for $37.

Legos Star Wars

!<http://ps2media.ign.com/ps2/image/article/731/731211/lego-star-wars-ii-the-original-trilogy-20060907004540203-000.jpg! “Legos Star Wars II”:http://www.gamerankings.com/itemrankings/launchreview.asp?reviewid=725342 has to have my vote for the most unlikely combination, but it works. We down loaded the demo and it is so cute to see all those legos in the Star Wars world, plus there are puzzles everywhere and by definition it isn’t gory, the legos just break up 🙂

The original Legos Star Wars was great and the sequel is just as good, so get them both :_)
