After talking with an Apple Representative today, I was asking more about how to use Push and Fetch features. Especially, for Google calendars to sync to the iPhone [...]

Backend comparisons: Exchange, Google, or MobileMe
September 5th, 2008 · No Comments · Geek
Whether you are a small business or a family, everyone needs the same three things:
Email ideally from your own vanity domain, whether it is myname@tongfamily.com or myname@igncap.com, while having a @gmail.com or @me.com is nice, we all want our own identity. And we need lots of disk space, at least 2GB per user. Have wireless [...]

Using CalDav to bidirectional sync Google Calendar and iCal
September 2nd, 2008 · No Comments · Geek
Well it isn’t perfect yet. Seems to work great for one calendar that is read/write on Google Calendar and also to have lots of read-only calendars (iCal calls these subscriptions) while read/write calendars are called accounts. (The bigger issue is that iPhone sync with Nuevasync doesn’t seem to work).
There is also much confusion about how [...]

Eureka! Google Calendar to iPhone and iCal hub
August 29th, 2008 · No Comments · Geek
Well, I’m testing it now, but looks like we might finally be able to get off of Exchange. Here is how to use Google Calendar as the hub of all your scheduling:
Upload your calendar to Google Calendar. This is confusing because the Google Calendar user interface has been changing so radically but Google Help. The [...]

Reset iCal and Entourage
July 30th, 2008 · No Comments · Geek
I’ve had terrible problems with both iCal and Entourage. With iCal, I first tried to use Google Calendar and then started deleting excessive calendars. Then, when I rebooted, I discovered that I couldn’t see any calendars and also that when I tried to add another calendar with New calendar, iCal just hung.
First thing to [...]

Apple has a tool showing what is available where. The stores open at 8AM. Amazing the demang. All models except the Black 16GB in Alderwood Mall are available at all four Seattle area stores in Bellevue, Lynnwood, Seattle and Tukwila. 16GB Black not surprisingly is the most popular model. And there are activation issues that [...]

Could Google Calendar or MobileMe replace Exchange calendaring
June 10th, 2008 · No Comments · Geek
With the announcement of MobileMe, we looked again at whether we can replace Exchange on our backend. The mail is interchangeable and the contacts we have aren’t shared, so the only function we really need is a shared viewable calendar that works online, offline when you are on a Macbook, on a Blackberry and on [...]

Google Apps

We’ve been trying to figure out the right way to do email and synchronize Calendars. Maybe Google is the right way to do it on the backend?
The candidates are:
Exchange. This is trusty and reliable. The main issue is do we have to run our own Exchange and Blackberry Servers or do the hosted solutions work. [...]
