The apps on an iPhone use Fairplay DRM which allow five machines to be authorized. So here is how to get two iPhones in your family works. Hat tip to TUAW for this note from “allforces”:http://allforces.com/2008/07/22/share-apps-between-iphones/
It is complicated, but basically what you do is to have two computers and authorize both for a single iTunes account. Then re-download applictions that you bought on one computer to the other.
There is paradise on earth. In this case wordpress has a blogging client for iPhone. I can blog anywhere now
Just hope it doesn’t crash as much as twinkle does!
Hat tip to john Ludwig for this one.
Hat tip to “TUAW”:http://www.tuaw.com/2008/06/24/mod-use-your-macbook-air-superdrive-on-any-machine/ apparently, “Tnkgrl”:http://tnkgrl.wordpress.com/2008/06/24/macbook-air-superdrive-for-all/ has figured out how to open up a Superdrive, replace a part and thus make it universally compatible with all computers. Great geekout. OTOH, why go to all the trouble :-)? The “photos”:http://www.flickr.com/photos/tnkgrl/sets/72157605790040071/ are really useful so you can disassemble it. The short version is the black bottom comes out if you slip a credit card in the seam. Then you can look the LEDs and see if the drive is lighting up. (Mine was). In the end, I shook it enough that it seemed to unjam the drive. So give that a try before returning.
Some other tricks are noted below that are software related
The short story is that although some folks think it is incompatible with other computers because it needs more current (1 amp is needed to burn, although much less to read). There isn’t specail firmware either. You can take apart the SuperDrive and mount it into a PC and it works fine. What happened is Apple hacked into the IDE-to-USB bridge and make special firmware. The slime!
“Apple Discussions”:http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1550094&tstart=0 has other frustrated people with the same problem. Apple – Support – Discussions – Disc stuck into superdrive AND won’t …
I have just bought a MBA. I managed to install windows ans other software through the superdrive. Now I’ve just put a DVD into it to watch a movie and it got stuck into the superdrive. I browsed on the forum, tried to reboot while holding the trackpad button but the disc is still stuck… at rebooting the superdrives “becomes alive” but it looks like it has no force to eject it (and I have tried rebooting both with and without the power cable connected to MBA)
There is a rumor that holding the mouse button down while it reboots will work. Also that holding down the “C” key when booting might help.
Now here is what I think it happening, it is trying to eject (you can hear the drive spinning and it trying to hiccup). Apple – Support – Discussions – Disc stuck into superdrive AND won’t …
Does it sound Like it’s trying to eject? These new SDs are so thin that it is common for them to get out of alignment. The DVD rubs against the top of the case and stops ejecting. It happens often on the MacBooks and maybe this is the case with the USB drive.
With the aluminum MacBook Pros Apple ships a spatula to adjust the case. It’s under warranty so you should take it back in any case.
As an aside one strange thing is the drive doesn’t appear at all in the “System Profiler”:http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=262108 and they also suggest resetting your “PRAM”:http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238 or “PMU”:http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303319. Most folks are just replacing the SuperDrives though on MacBook Pros as this example shows.
Hat tip to Bill on this one, a good source of overview information that shows the size of the internet advertising business. “Clickz”:http://www.clickz.com/showPage.html?page=3630011 which is mainly from Neilson Online (really “Netratings”:http://www.netratings.com/). Some tidbits:
* Web Media (what ever that is?) is largest at 74B impressions per month
* Financial services is the largest segment I understand at 52B impressions per month
* Retail goods and services 35B (which is different than consumer goods at 10B)
* Telecommunications is 26B. I imagine these are cheap long distance
* The other interesting ones were travel at 7.5B which is much smaller than I would have thought
* Public services is 9.6B whatever that is.
Final interesting thing is latest search share. “Netratings”:http://www.netratings.com/pr/pr_080619V.pdf says it is 59% Google. Yahoo is 17% and Microsoft increase share by 72% to their share to 13% since last year in May. Overall search grew 9.5% YOY. Google by 15% so share growth is modest at best.
Finally I thought the top 25 companies buying sponsored links (you know the right hand side of google) was interesting and sort of unexpected too. Here they are along with the top three search terms they bought. Most of the top searches look like people typing into the toolbar a URL. But I would never have guess term 3 for ebay, nextag and others was google:”refrigeration tools”

Kind of amazing, this guy travelled around the world twice doing the same dance in different places (hat tip to the fake “Steve Ballmer”:http://fakesteveballmer.blogspot.com/2008/06/i-just-liked-this.html) for this rocking good video. I mainly love the soundtrack. What a great job and what a great adventure. 14 months of travel, 42 countries at “Where the Hell is Matt?”:http://wherethehellismatt.com and thank “Stride Gum”:http://stridegum.com for the imagination to sponsor him. Hat tip to Matt for this quote! I’ve been collecting bunches and now with Mac OS X Mail, you’ll get them rotated:
Benjamin Franklin Quotes
Beer is living proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.

It is said that if you know your enemies and know yourself, you will not be imperiled in a hundred battles; if you do not know your enemies but do know yourself, you will win one and lose one; if you do not know your enemies nor yourself, you will be imperiled in every single battle.
