Tricking an iPhone to use an optimized page using an Google

If you search Google on your iphone and click on a link, it uses a javascript program to make the page look good. The Javascript takes a multicolumn page and turn it into a single readable column.  But, it is quite hard to get it to do it without going to Google all the time on your iPhone or iPod touch. So here is how thanks to Abel:

# Load <a href=””></a> by emailing it to yourself
# Read the email on your iPhone and click on the link
# The page you get won’t load, however
# choose to add as a bookmark
# Edit the leading ‘http://’ out of the URL.
# Go to the website you want
# once it starts loading, click the bookmark you created
# it will render the page optimized for iPhone
# You can then bookmark the newly rendered page for future use.

Lyrics and Artwork on the Mac

I’ve tried a bunch of tools. Pearlyrics is gone thanks to the RIAA, it was great because it would go through your whole set of songs. All the rest just do the current playing song and most are widgets now:

# “Harmonic: This seems to work the best. Listens to the current song and plugs the lyrics into iTunes and therefore into the MP3s.
# Cantopod. Nicest interface, but doesn’t automatically insert
# I Sing iTunes. This is most popular sing it handles Japanese and Chinese lyrics, but it seems to hang for me.
# “Album Art Thingy 1.9”: Reported downloads artwork and lyrics inthe background. Cost $15, but saves lots of time!
# “Amazon Album Art Widget”: is a manual utility and looks up the current song.
# “GimmeSomeTune”: is donationware that does lyrics and artwork.

Also you want to automatically get artwork. ITunes finds artwork, but unless you manually go a Get Info and put it in, it doesn’t copy it into the MP3.

You can finally buy an iPhone

It’s true, my buddy Mac wandered in and just bought one. Now with the upcoming iPod and iTouch refreshes coming up it is going to be a great fall for Apple.

AppleInsider | iPhone 3G finally reaching supply and demand balance

After more than six weeks of almost constant iPhone 3G shortages, Apple is finally known to be getting a grip on its retail supply and has virtually every model in stock everywhere

AppleInsider | iPhone 3G finally reaching supply and demand balance

The equilibrium isn’t seen as slowing demand and instead simply reflects Apple stepping up its production, he adds, reiterating his belief that earlier estimates of 3.8 million iPhones sold during the September quarter are “very conservative” and that this surge of sales could spill over into Apple’s fiscal 2009.

URL shortcuts on iPhone and iPod Touch

How cool is that, very useful. Need more shortcuts like this!

Iphone 2.0: Domain Shortcut Helps Type URLs in Your iPhone More Quickly

First, in Mobile Safari, just hold down the .com button for a second to see other domain options (namely .net, .edu, and .org). Second, when the keyboard has the @ symbol but no .com key, you can hold the ‘.’ (period) key to get the same domain shortcuts

DVD Backup

Well the world is moving on to Blu-ray and I’ll have to get one of these bad boys at some point (and replace my whole television too, the lovely 250kg monster that it is). In the meantime, backing up DVDs and so forth goes on. Here’s the workflow I use. Its a little old these days, but has proven reliable:

# “DVD Decrypter”: has since been discontinued, but there is still a mirro available. You set it to File mode to have it work with DVD Shrink
# “DVD Shrink”: I’ve tried a bunch, but this freeware still seem to work the best. Basically, it reduces the files and leaves everything else the same. Run this in File mode to get the raw files
# “VOB2MPG”: to take these files on your hard drive and convert them to a single gigantic MPG file. Or use “DVD Shrink”: Leave the DVD in there and now rerun DVD Decrypter on the these files in IFO mode for it to work with iPhone or your computer. In IFO mode, make sure to check on Tools/Settings/File Splitting and set this to None and select the first stream. It does most decryption and then puts the VIDEO_TS files on your hard disk.
# “Videora”: works on the PC and it takes an unencrypted DVD files on your hard disk and converts them to iPod, iTouch or iPhone formats. You can also use this for PC viewing if you keep in mind the raw format of a DVD is 720x480i or in 4:3 mode what is called VGA X.264, so if you just compress to that, you’ll get about 700MB per hour for a high-def DVD. Or 350MB per hour for a lower def. So in Videola, for an iPhone, select the setting set H.264 480×320 768Kbps Stereo/128Kbps two pass. And for your computer, select H.264 VGA 1MBps/128Kbps.
