Final decisions on ultracompact cameras: Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX35 vs. Canon Powershot SD790 IS

September 16th, 2008 · 1 Comment · Geek

Well, unless you are going for a pro-grade compact camera like the soon to launch $500 Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3, probably your main criteria is being small and OK pictures which is what you are going to get. Overall, it is interesting how cameras have not improved much from my trusty SD500 and Fuji F11 [...]

Canon PowerShot G10 (G9 as a preview)

September 6th, 2008 · No Comments · Geek

This is coming out in October, but is a pretty big update. A reason to wait before buying a LX-3, I think. Popphoto had the notice. The previous G9 did get very good reviews (it is 12MP vs. the 15MP in the new G10)

14.7 megapixels (wow!)
28-140mm 5x zoom
3 inch LCD

RAW support
The biggest advantage of [...]

Ricoh GX200

September 6th, 2008 · No Comments · Photography

Ricoh really pioneered the idea of a high end compact camera that could actually take good pictures. Photographyblog.com has a good review. Note there is also the Ricoh GR Digital II which is essentially the same but with a fixed 28mm lense. It’s pricey at $600, but it is a high end camera.

111mm x [...]

High Quality Compact Camera

September 6th, 2008 · No Comments · Photography

Well here are the choices right now in rough order and the net is that if you can hold off, the Canon G10 is probably good. I’d say for quality the LX3 is probably going to give higher quality shot but be larger.

Panasonic DMC-LX3. Good quality to ISO 400 and great Leica lense. Reasonably compact. [...]

Panasonic DMC-LX3

September 6th, 2008 · No Comments · Geek

While SLRs are getting incredible, the whole compact end is stagnant. Even with a 14 megapixel sensor, the small size means they are noisy and getting a decent shot at ISO 400 is nearly impossible. That plus slow lenses means I really don’t like the quality. This is a semi-professional camera much like the [...]

Canon XT 350D Parameter settings and correct ISO settings

July 1st, 2008 · No Comments · Geek

I’ve had this camera for two years now and am still finding a new thing or two. One thing to watch out for is the Parameter settings. These are like Picture Styles in the newer Canon XTi (400D) and XSi (450D)
Canon Digital Rebel XT review EOS-350D
There are 2 pre-set parameter sets with Parameter 1 [...]

No Compact Camera for a prosumer? GX200, DP1, G9, SD950 compared

June 30th, 2008 · No Comments · Geek

Well, been looking for a high end compact camera. When I was on film, used a Yashica which was compact, but had a great fixed focus lense and excellent quality. There really isn’t a good answer yet for digital. What do you need for a prosumer that is different from a point-and-shoot. Well, the ideal [...]

Next Full Frame Cameras: Canon 5D Mark II, Nikon D700 and Sony too

June 22nd, 2008 · No Comments · Photography

With Nikon’s strong product line and the D60 and D300 and Canon needs to reply (and those of us with Canon lenses are praying). Nikon has doubled its market share in the last two years, so Canon is really in an interesting position (read, they don’t have products to defend share).
Canonrumors.com provides those of us [...]

DSLR Recommendations

May 20th, 2008 · No Comments · Photography

Well, the photo world is shaking up again. The new cameras are just so amazingly good and they are improving not so much in resolution. The megapixel wars are ending, but in providing great images at high ISOs. This means two things: a) available light shooting is much more natural and easier for everyone and [...]
